5 Authors You Should Read

There are so many brilliant authors out there – some it seems general knowledge to know of, and some that aren’t quite so famed. In this post, I’ll shed some light on some of my favourite authors in the hope that it’ll help you find your new favourite.

1) Sarah J. Maas

A New York Times Bestselling author, Sarah J. Maas is currently writing two series – Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses, often abbreviated to TOG and ACOTAR. For now, TOG contains 5 novels, five prequel novellas (compiled into a book), and a colouring book. ACOTAR contains 3 novels and a colouring book. In September 2017, the sixth TOG novel is coming out, and in May 2018, the seventh. Upon searching, Goodreads informs me that the expected publication for the fourth ACOTAR novel is in 2019.

I loved most books by Sarah J. Maas, and recommend them highly, but please bear in mind that all of ACOTAR and most of TOG contains mature content.

2) Agatha Christie

Dubbed the Queen of Crime, chances are you’ve heard of Agatha Christie, renowned author of the Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot series. She also wrote the play The Mousetrap, which has had the longest continuous run of any show in the world, and many other novels and plays.

Having read the Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot series, and seen The Mousetrap, I love Agatha Christie’s work, and will be reading more at some point. I recommend all that I have read or seen highly – everyone can do with a bit of wise Miss Marple or comedic Poirot in their lives.

3) Philippa Gregory

Philippa Gregory has written many books, but I’ve only read her historical fiction – the Plantagenet and Tudor Novels. I enjoyed all of them and recommend them. They’re all about the ladies of court – usually only seen as a daughter, wife, or sister etc. in history, but Philippa Gregory gives them interesting stories, breathing life into them.

They used to be two series, but they’ve been merged. I prefer the Plantagenet novels, but all are brilliant. Please be warned that they contain mature content – it is the English Court, after all!

4) J.K. Rowling

This is turning out to be a list of bestselling authors, but I must include the brilliant J.K. Rowling, whom you will undoubtedly have heard of. I’ve read Harry Potter quite a few times, and they’re amazing novels – I just had to give them a quick mention in case you’ve somehow never heard of them.

5) Cathy Cassidy

Cathy Cassidy wrote the Chocolate Box Girls series, which I have read, as well as host of other books, a few of which I have read.

The Chocolate Box Girls series is about a family navigating the twists and turns of life. They’re relatable characters in (sometimes) relatable situations. The books are YA, and I don’t believe that they contain mature content, although I am unsure. Be warned that serious subjects are covered (such as mental health and animal cruelty).

I hope that this post is helpful to you in finding some new books/authors.

Happy reading!
